Since 2007, Toby has participated in Team in Training as a cyclist, coach and mechanic. This program, which is part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, trains athletes to participate in a variety of endurance sports and raises funds for blood cancer research and patient services.
Toby also coaches cycling for the Guilford/High Point Team of Special Olympics North Carolina. He began coaching when a friend invited him to visit her daughter’s team: “I was so impressed by the range of athletes on the team. I instantly wanted to be a part of it. For people with intellectual and physical disabilities, cycling offers a great way to improve balance, muscle tone and fitness. Cycling is also a fun activity so the team provides a positive social network too.
As a mechanic for my local team and as the ‘neutral support’ mechanic for SONC competitions, I see the equipment challenges facing coaches and athletes alike. Cycling is a costly sport and anything we can do to put our cyclists on safer, more appropriate bikes is well worth the effort. That concern is what brings me to Carolina Flyers, Inc.”
